Makapuu Wayside (Ka Iwi) Scenic Trail

Makapuu Wayside (part of Ka Iwi State Scenic Shoreline) includes a 2-mile round-trip hike with some stunning scenery on the southeastern tip of Oahu. Here you can taste the wind as it first blows onto the island from the great stretch of ocean to the east. Parking can be problematic, as there isn't a proper parking lot here. Generally, people park their cars on the side of the road near the locked gate. Long ago it was possible to drive through the gate and get closer to the point, but now auto access has been restricted due to the wear of the road. Be extremely careful about the traffic as you park, and follow all appropriate laws. Past the gate, you will walk over a mile on an old road. Along the first part of the trail, cactus line the sides of the road. Later the walk ascends, and glorious views of Koko Crater, Sea Life Park, and Manana (Rabbit) Island unfold. There is the Makapuu lighthouse, and several exotic succulent plants. In season, you may be able to see beautiful yellow cactus flowers.
