Haleakala Sunrise, Maui

Truly one of the most powerful sunrise or sunset experiences in Hawaii, the journey to the summit of Mount Haleakala on the island of Maui is quite an adventure. For one thing, the altitude change can be abrupt, so be alert to the warning signs of altitude sickness. Also, it is quite cold up here. Even in the summer, you will probably want your heavy coat, or at least the comforter from the hotel. From here you can look down on the clouds below as the sun comes up. Sunrise is more reliably good here than sunset, because sometimes clouds roll in during the day and obscure the sunset view. It is usually crisp and clear first thing in the morning. The trick is getting here in time: from Kihei or Lahaina on the west coast of Maui, it can take several hours to make the drive up the mountain in the darkness, so leave very early or stay partway up the mountain in Kula. Ask at your lodging for more details on when you need to leave.
