Lanikai Bay - Mokulua Nui Island

These photos are primarily of one of the Mokulua Islands in Lanikai Bay. To get here, you kayak across the bay from Lanikai Beach. Kayaks are available for rent in Kailua nearby. Lanikai beach has no public facilities, and access is through the public access alleys required by law on all Hawaiian beaches. Kayaking across the bay can be an adventure. Do not attempt this if the surf is up! You have to kayak right around some potentially-treacherous reef, and the trip is about a mile on the water. However, if the surf is flat enough, you will see multiple turtles on your trip, and snorkeling can be good in the bay. Use appropriate precautions, don't travel alone, and stay within your limits. Mokulua Nui is a bird sanctuary, and it is not unusual to see many nesting birds. The nearby Mokulua Iki is closed to public access to protect nesting birds.
