Matsumoto's in Haleiwa has the best shave ice on the island, in our opinion. In fact, they are so famous that they even have a large selection of t-shirts about their shave ice store. Shave ice is a Hawaiian tradition, and has nothing to do with cheap ice-with-sugar-water imitations you may have had in the past. Get one with ice cream and sweet Japanese azuki beans (try it - it's good), and try one of the exotic tropical flavors. Their rainbow combination is particularly good. This is a great stop after a day at the north shore attractions nearby, such as Waimea Audobon Center, Waimea Bay Beach, and Turtle Beach.
