Haleakala National Park

Haleakala National Park has two sections open to the public: One on the summit of the mountain, and one down near the coast (the Kipahulu or Oheo Gulch area). The two sections are connected by a strip of rainforest that runs down the side of the mountain and is only accessible for research purposes by special permit. The summit of the volcano includes the Haleakala Crater area, a desolate landscape full of rugged beauty, as well as Hosmer grove, a manmade forest on the mountain slopes ringing with birdsong.
