There are two types of lava: pahoehoe and a'a. A'a lava, which is rough, is formed from violent, bubbling lava eruptions, whereas pahoehoe, a smoother lava rock, is formed from usually slower moving, flowing lava eruptions. This a'a lava is among the first that you see as you descend into the crater on the Kilauea Iki loop trail of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
