This photo from the rim of the crater near the start of the Kilauea Iki trail shows Ohia Lehua trees clinging for dear life to the cliff face. Ohia Lehua trees are hardy trees and are able grow in extremely harsh conditions. They are among the first colonizers of bare lava rock and are an important part of the ecosystem in the park.
