A short drive from the Kilauea Iki trailhead is Thurston Lava Tube, a large, lighted cave with stairway access at both ends. A lava tube is formed when the top layer of flowing lava hardens into rock and the lava underneath remains liquid and flows out. The trail to the lava tube moves through the same rainforest environment that began the Kilauea Iki trail.
