There is often lava flowing into the ocean somewhere in the park. At one time Chain of Craters Road was a good way to access viewpoints for this lava, but as of spring 2008, Chain of Craters Road is CLOSED due to dangerous conditions. Always check with rangers for an update on the latest conditions regarding lava flows! They will be able to tell you whether it is possible to safely view lava, and if so, where.
