After a few hours, the road turns toward the east, and then gradually northeast. This is where the Kona Coast gives way to the southern coast of the Big Island. A detour here would take us to South Point, the very southern tip of the Big Island and the southernmost point of the 50 United States. We continue on the main road, however, and soon the coastline and the road come close together again near Punaluu Black Sand Beach, pictured here. The beach is black because it is composed of raw lava rock, not ordinary sand.
