Waimea Canyon
Along the western third of Kauai runs a canyon so beautiful it has been nicknamed "The Grand Canyon of the Pacific." Waimea Canyon is about 10 miles long and over 3000 feet deep at its deepest point. Unlike the true Grand Canyon, the environment here is lush and green, making a dramatic contrast with the red volcanic dirt. As you drive along the valley, you may see the Nene, the state bird of Hawaii, and the rare iliau plant that grows only here, along with waterfalls and an ever-changing kaleidescope of sunlight on the rocks below.
