Best of Hawaii Volcanoes NP

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park includes some of the most active volcanoes in the world. Most of the park is situated in the central part of the southeast coast of the Big Island. The climate in the park varies from desert to lush tropical rainforest, and the park stretches from the coastline all the way to the summit of Mauna Loa 13,678 feet above. There are even a few caves in the park formed by the action of lava flowing to the sea. Always check with park rangers about current conditions before attempting any activity anywhere in the park. Volcanic eruptions here are generally not violent, but the volcanoes can be extremely unpredictable and only the rangers will know the latest information on the day of your visit. Explore the park using the menus on this page, or click the first photo at right to begin an overview tour.
