Near the Devastation Trail trailhead is this overlook into the Kilauea Iki Crater. Kilauea Iki was the site of a violent eruption during November 14-21, 1959. During the eruption event, the caldera filled with a lava lake and at one point lava spewed as high as 1900 feet (580 meters), according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Today Kilauea Iki is a the site of a great trail that winds across the floor of the still steaming caldera.
