Per square mile of coastline, the Big Island of Hawaii actually doesn't have as many great beaches as you might expect. Much of the western coastline is very rocky, and because it is the youngest of the islands there hasn't been as much time for beaches to develop as on the other islands. Still, there are a number of interesting beaches here. Probably the best beach on the Big Island of Hawaii, and possibly in the whole state, is Hapuna Beach. Hapuna Beach State Park is located on the South Kohala coast about an hour's drive north of Kailua-Kona on the western (leeward) side of the island. There are great facilities here, a wide beach with the softest sand we've experienced in Hawaii, and a bay that usually offers excellent swimming.
