Our overview tour of Maui begins in an unlikely place: in the freezing darkness atop a 10,000-foot mountain. This is the wild Hawaii that many sun-seekers miss. As the cold wind blows through us, the stars blaze brilliantly above, and the first rays of light from a tropical sun penetrate the eastern horizon. We are at the summit of Mount Haleakala in Haleakala National Park. Behind us, between Mount Haleakala and the lower West Maui mountains, lies the valley that gives Maui its nickname, the Valley Isle.
