Waimea Canyon runs roughly north to south along the length of the western third of Kauai. As we enter Waimea Canyon State Park from the south, we begin to see why this place has been called "the Grand Canyon of the Pacific." A brief walk on the Iliau Nature Loop brings us to this iliau flower stalk (left in photo) and view of the canyon beyond. The iliau plant grows only here, on the southern slopes of Waimea Canyon on Kauai. It is related to the silversword that grows on Haleakala on Maui and Mauna Kea on the Big Island.
