On the south Kohala Coast, about an hour's drive north of Kailua-Kona, is perhaps the best swimming beach on the Big Island, and possibly in the entire state: Hapuna Beach. Adjacent to the beach is the exquisite Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel. This resort and public park has sand like finely-powdered sugar, beautiful sunshine, and normally mild waves. There are extensive state park facilities available for public use as well.
