Laniakea Beach - Turtle Beach

Lani's Beach (Laniakea Beach Park) on the north shore of Oahu is nicknamed "turtle beach" because turtles frequently warm in the sun there. There is a rock formation leading out into the water that provides natural protection from tiger sharks, which feed on sea turtles. It is common to see the sea turtles on the beach sunning themselves and resting. Please do not disturb the turtles; it is very important that you not feed, touch, or approach them too close.

The swimming here is not good due to dangerous riptides and stinging seaweed from June through September. However, Laniakea is a great area to watch experienced surfers try the dangerous waves in the winter (waves are smaller in the summer). The waves can sometimes reach 25 feet here, and the professional surfers love it. Other good beaches to watch expert surfing nearby include Sunset Beach and Waimea Bay Beach.

You can find Laniakea Beach (aka "Turtle Beach") by looking for the pile-up of cars along the road on the north shore of the island. It is roughly two miles east of Haleiwa town in the direction of Waimea Bay.
