Inside the crater, you can look up to the rim beyond the kiawe trees and just barely see your destination. From Waikiki, it looks like Diamond Head might be fairly easy to hike, but in reality it does take a about an hour and a lot of switchbacks to cover the 0.7 mile trail to the summit. Kiawe trees are related to mequite trees and love the dry environment here.
