Ahihi Kinau State Natural Reserve

Ahihi Kinau is located on the southwestern side of Maui near the end of the coastal road. At the southern end of the reserve is La Perouse Bay. Makena Beach is a short way to the north. At times you may also be able to see Molokini, the world famous snorkel site, offshore and to the north.

The reserve is generally rocky and the seas are often too rough for swimming. However, when conditions are good, there can be great snorkeling and diving here, with clear water, some coral, lava rock, and beautiful fish. Since there is little sand on the beach, there isn't as much sand to stir up, and the water can at times be crystal clear here. There are great views of the slopes of Haleakala and the ocean here. Be sure you wear shoes or dive boots, because the lava shoreline can be quite sharp. Also remember that since this is a Natural Preserve, you are not allowed to disturb any of the wildlife or take anything home for yourself as a snorkeling souvenir (except photos of course).

Ahihi Kinau has a small parking area, but not much in the way of facilities. There is no lifeguard here. This is a great spot to stop, stretch your legs, listen to the ocean, and take a picture of the beautiful coastline here, if you are driving south toward La Perouse Bay. La Perouse Bay also offers snorkeling in season; see the La Perouse Bay page for more details.
