Kilauea Iki
(NOTE: This trail was closed as of summer 2008. Check the NPS website under External Links below for the latest information on volcanic activity.) The Kilauea Iki loop is probably the best hike in the entire park. The Kilauea Iki loop trailhead is located near Thurston Lava Tube, almost 3/4 of the way around the Crater Rim Road loop. The trail is a moderate 4-mile loop hike that begins in the lush tropical forest on the crater rim (see photo). The types of ferns and exotic plants in the forest make it unlike any we have seen anywhere else in Hawaii. It has its own unique character and would be worth the trip even if it weren't for the crater adventure ahead.
