As we return to the main highway around the island, the road begins to turn due west. We pass through the upcountry cowboy (paniolo) town of Waimea and emerge on the far northwest coast of the island. This area is called the Kohala Coast and is full of some of the best beaches on the island. We continue west, drive down out of the mountains, and turn south when the road hits the coast.
