Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is located about 10 miles east of Waikiki on Highway 1 (Kalaniana'ole Highway). Getting onto Highway 1 heading east can be tricky at times, so ask at your lodging for the best way to access the freeway. Hanauma Bay is the result of a volcanic crater whose sea-facing wall eroded, allowing the ocean to flow in and create a sheltered cove.
