This close-up shot shows more of the beach and the reef. The best strategy is to snorkely out between the reefs and watch for fish along the way. The large open spot in the middle of the photo is known as the "keyhole" and is a great place to start. Toward the far end of the bay the water can get shallow, and it can be much more difficult to snorkel without touching the coral. You want to avoid touching the coral for two reasons. First, coral is sharp and full of sea urchins, so you can get injured. Second, and just as important, is the fact that you can kill living creatures or even the reef itself by touching it. The water is clearest early in the morning. If you arrive early enough to snorkel when the sun has just come up, you might even see huge sea turles grazing on algae inside the reef.
