As we leave the cool overlooks of Haleakala's slopes and move down to the southern coast, we make our way to the beach. This beach, part of a series of three Kamaole Beach Parks, is located in Kihei. Like all the Hawaiian islands, Maui has a windward side and a leeward (or Kona) side. The windward side (the north and east) usually gets the rain, leaving the leeward side dry and sunny. Most of the beach resorts on Maui are on the leeward (western) coast. Kihei, near the center of the leeward side, is a popular spot for those who don't want to spend a lot of money at the posh beach resorts in the northwest and southwest parts of the coast.
