Our last highlight from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the Halemaumau Crater. This view is from the overlook at the excellent and informative Jaggar Museum. Halemaumau was a red-hot lake of fiery volcanic activity when Mark Twain visited the area in the 1800s, and has recently been active again. The pungent smell of sulfur still fills the air near the crater itself, and the area has been closed on and off recently. Always talk to park officials before attempting to visit any area of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
