Thurston Lava Tube
Near the Kilauea Caldera in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is Thurston Lava Tube. A lava tube is formed when the top layer of a lava flow hardens into stone. If the lower layers remain hot enough to stay liquid, they will flow out of the resulting tunnel and down to the sea. When the lava stops flowing, a tunnel-shaped cave called a lava tube remains. Thurston Lava tube includes a lighted, level path, although a few stairs are required to enter and exit the cave. |
