Coastal Lava Flow
The photos in the section were all taken from near the end of Chain of Craters Road in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii. Chain of Craters was completed in 1928, but beginning in 1986 lava flows from the current eruption of Kilauea buried 7.5 miles of the coastal section. As of spring 2008, Chain of Craters road may be CLOSED due to hazardous conditions. Always check with the park rangers for current conditions. They will be able to tell you whether it is safe to view the lava entering the ocean, and if so, where. You can also find information on their website at www.nps.gov/havo |
