Even further north, at the end of a dead-end offshoot from the main Hawaii Belt Highway, we reach Waipio Valley. Waipio Valley is an undisturbed valley where many of the residents still carry on Hawaiian traditions of agriculture. The grey sand beach at the bottom is alluring, but requires a long journey down a very steep and slippery dirt road. After a moment's reflection, we retrace our steps to the Hawaii Belt Road and continue around the island.

Our Big Island tour continues in Part 4: Kohala Coast.
